Swedish cyclist Caroline Andersson, 25, was rushed to hospital after lying motionless following a mass crash at the UCI Women's Road Race World Championship in Montreal on Saturday, September 26.
Andersson, representing Sweden in the elite women's event, was involved in the crash with 95km remaining on the city circuit. The incident took out several main contenders for the rainbow jersey.
Medics treat Andersson at the scene
Andersson appeared to be the worst affected, lying motionless for an extended period. Medics attended to her quickly, and she was seen being placed in a neck brace before being taken to hospital.
One fan commented: "The immobility of Caroline Andersson after the fall, face down and without reaction, is terrifying." Another said: "That looked pretty bad for Caroline Andersson. Hopefully she will be ok."
Swedish federation confirms condition
Swedish Cycling Federation president Thomas Backteman told TNT Sports that Andersson is conscious and receiving treatment, adding that she appeared able to move her arms and legs.
Backteman also confirmed that Sweden's Julia Borgstom stopped to help her team-mate before abandoning the race in tears. He said: "She is okay. She did not fall but stopped and helped Caroline when she crashed. She left the race after that and is on her way to the hotel. She is okay but it is of course a shock for her."
Crash impact and race result
Australia's Lauretta Hanson was also taken to hospital as a result of the crash.
Demi Vollering took her maiden world title in Montreal, out-sprinting Poland's Kasia Niewiadoma, after being reeled in by Niewiadoma and Italy's Elisa Longo Borghini, who held on for bronze.
