Cobolli Defeats De Minaur in Straight Sets
Flavio Cobolli secured a commanding victory over Alex De Minaur on day eight of Wimbledon 2026, winning 7-5, 7-6, 6-3 on No. 1 Court. The Italian, known for his explosive forehand and quick footwork, broke De Minaur's serve late in the third set after a tight contest. Cobolli's win sets up a quarter-final clash with Grigor Dimitrov or Britain's Arthur Fery.
De Minaur, who struggled to maintain consistency, was broken at a crucial moment in the third set, double-faulting twice to hand Cobolli the advantage. The Australian, engaged to British No. 2 Katie Boulter, will now turn his attention to their upcoming wedding later this month.
Paolini Overcomes Eala in Three Sets
Jasmine Paolini fought back from a second-set loss to defeat Alexandra Eala 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 on Centre Court. The 30-year-old Italian, who had not won more than two consecutive matches in 2026 due to a persistent foot injury, showed resilience to advance to her first Grand Slam quarter-final since reaching the Wimbledon final two years ago.
Eala, the Filipino trailblazer who stunned Iga Swiatek in the previous round, received a standing ovation as she left the court. Paolini, after the match, thanked the crowd and acknowledged Roger Federer, who was watching from the Royal Box, calling him her idol. She will face Marta Kostyuk, who earlier defeated Ashlyn Krueger 6-4, 6-4, in the quarter-finals.
Mertens and Kostyuk Also Advance
Elise Mertens, seeded 25th, defeated Marie Bouzkova 6-4, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in her career. The Belgian, who had previously lost in the fourth round four times, said the match was nerve-wracking but she was glad to close it out. She will face the winner of Madison Keys versus Linda Noskova.
Earlier, Marta Kostyuk, seeded 12th, beat Ashlyn Krueger 6-4, 6-4 to book her place in the last eight. The Ukrainian's consistent play sets up a tough test for Paolini.
Upcoming Matches
On Centre Court, Arthur Fery takes on Grigor Dimitrov, while Madison Keys faces Linda Noskova on No. 1 Court. With several top seeds eliminated, the women's draw is wide open, and the remaining players have a golden opportunity to claim the title.
