Sea Lanes Canary Wharf: London's First Floating Lido Experience
Sea Lanes Canary Wharf: London's First Floating Lido

Sea Lanes Canary Wharf, London's first 'natural water' lido, has welcomed more than 13,000 swimmers in its first month since opening in June. The venue offers a 50-metre open water pool with lanes for all abilities, eco-friendly saunas, and a lakeside dining area, aiming to provide safe and accessible open water swimming in the heart of the capital.

A New Urban Oasis

Canary Wharf, once associated with glass high-rises and finance, has transformed into an urban oasis with culture, leisure, and community spaces. Sea Lanes is the latest addition, helping meet the growing demand for outdoor swimming, especially during heatwaves.

The venue features two wood-crafted saunas powered by renewable energy, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the pool. An all-day dining area with al fresco seating and a community clubhouse add to the relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.

Swimming Experience

During a recent heatwave, the pool sat at a brisk 19C, offering a refreshing contrast to the 30C temperatures. The open water setting provides a sense of freedom unlike traditional chlorine pools, with the Canary Wharf skyline as a backdrop. Swimmers are advised to use showers afterwards to avoid lingering river scent.

The open-plan design makes navigation easy, with well-equipped changing facilities for those heading back to work or other engagements. Visitors can also enjoy brunch, cocktails, and food while soaking in the post-swim high.

Demand for Safe Outdoor Swimming

With climate change driving more extreme heat, access to safe open water is becoming crucial. Lidos fill up quickly, and people turn to rivers, protected pools, and canals, many of which are dangerous or polluted. Sea Lanes director Harry Smith said he wanted to create a safe way for people to access open water, and the response has exceeded expectations.

“Welcoming more than 13,000 swimmers in our first month has been an incredible milestone and a fantastic endorsement of what we set out to create,” Smith said. “From day one, our ambition was to create a destination where people could reconnect with nature, build confidence in the water and enjoy the physical and mental wellbeing benefits of open water swimming.”

He added: “It's been inspiring to see people of all ages and abilities embracing Sea Lanes Canary Wharf, and we're excited to build on that momentum by introducing even more ways for people to experience Eden Dock and connect with the water.”
