The Prem Rugby match between Bristol Bears and Northampton Saints was suspended for 10 minutes after England international Benhard Janse van Rensburg was knocked out while attempting to tackle Henry Pollock. The centre's head hit the Northampton flanker's knee late in the first half, leaving him motionless on the pitch as worried players from both teams shouted at the referee to stop the game.
Medical staff rush to the pitch
Medics sprinted onto the field to help the player as players gathered around in a state of considerable anxiety. Broadcaster TNT Sports refused to air a replay of the incident, saying it was not appropriate for viewers.
Play remained suspended for an extended period while medics stabilised the player's neck before he was carried off on a stretcher to a standing ovation from the crowd.
Player conscious and talking
Footage from the dressing room showed the Bristol back walking about and chatting to teammates. During the interval, presenter Ugo Monye reassured viewers: "An update on Van Rensburg. We saw upsetting pictures of him leaving the pitch. He is currently conscious and talking and we wish him all the best."
The incident happened with Bristol leading 15-7 shortly after a try from Louis Rees-Zammit, though Saints cut the deficit to 15-14 on the stroke of half-time.
Pundits react
Pundit Sam Warburton said: "Fair play to van Rensburg, he flew off the line but his head caught the knee of a Saints carrier (Pollock). I hope he is OK." Lead commentator Nick Mullins told viewers: "We're hearing the replay is absolutely not one that we want to be sharing with you. It's not good."
The centre is expected to be a regular member of Steve Borthwick's squad over the next 12 months as England prepare for next year's World Cup.
