The pool at Pentwyn Leisure Centre in Cardiff will reopen on Monday, July 27, after being closed for more than six years. It never reopened following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Since its closure in 2020, the pool has been a contentious issue for many in the area who campaigned for its return. It was once considered one of the best pools in Cardiff.
During the pandemic, Cardiff Rugby trained at the site for four years before leaving in summer 2024. Although the leisure centre partially reopened after the club moved out, the pool remained shut.
Work and new features
Work on the new pool began in February 2025 and was originally set to open at the end of last year, but further setbacks delayed the opening. The 25m pool now features adaptable moving floors for better accessibility, a new slide, and a family-focused aquatic play area.
Cardiff Council said it also includes new village-style changing facilities, family spaces, and accessible cubicles. The pool was due to open a week earlier but was pushed back due to minor certification and insurance issues.
Rooftop solar panels have also been added to the leisure centre.
Further upgrades
Cardiff Council Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism, Councillor Jennifer Burke, said: "We recognise that residents have had to wait for this facility to return, and we appreciate their patience while the work has been completed."
She added: "This is not the end of our investment in Pentwyn Leisure Centre. Alongside our partners GLL, we’re also delivering a range of other upgrades and improvements, that will result in a modern, inclusive and sustainable leisure facility that benefits the community for many years to come."
The main reception area is being redesigned and upgraded, and operators GLL are making significant investment in the health and fitness side of the centre. This includes a new gym space in the main activities hall with more equipment and dedicated workout zones. The existing gym space will become a fitness class studio for zumba, yoga, and pilates.
