Sean McCann, the brother of missing Madeleine McCann, has been selected to swim for Scotland at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The 21-year-old will make his Commonwealth debut when the Games begin this Thursday, July 23, and run until August 2.
Sean McCann's Swimming Career
According to Scottish Swimming, Sean will compete in freestyle disciplines as he aims to qualify for Team GB and swim at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. He began competitive swimming at age eight, starting with the Charnwood triathlon club before joining Loughborough Town swimming club. At ten, he was selected to swim at City of Leicester, later winning multiple county titles and becoming regional and national champion in his age group.
Training Regimen and Goals
Speaking on the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust website, Sean revealed his rigorous training schedule: "I have had to remain extremely dedicated, getting up at 4am multiple mornings each week to train, since the age of 11. I train nine times a week in the pool, as well as three gym sessions, totalling over 20 hours of training per week." He added, "I’m aiming to compete at the 2026 Commonwealth Games and also the 2028 Olympics in LA."
Family Background
Sean's twin sister Amelie is also part of the Scottish team for the rescheduled, slimmed-down Games. Madeleine McCann was three when she vanished from the family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3, 2007. Sean was two at the time. It is not known if their parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, will attend the events at Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
Previous Achievements
Sean previously raced for Scotland at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago, competing in the 400m and 1500m freestyle events.
