A major search and rescue operation is underway after a 15-year-old boy disappeared while swimming at Testwood Lakes Nature Reserve in Hampshire. The incident occurred on Wednesday 24 June, with emergency services alerted at 1:35pm.
Multi-Agency Response
Hampshire Police, the National Police Air Service, South Central Ambulance Service, and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Service are all involved in the search. Police have cordoned off the area and advised the public to avoid Testwood Lakes near Totton.
A police spokesman said: "A multi-agency operation is under way following a report that a 15-year-old boy is missing after he was last seen swimming at Testwood Lakes near Totton. This was reported to police at 1.35pm on Wednesday 24 June and the area is currently off limits while our search operation is ongoing. Please avoid the area at this time. We have deployed the marine units to aid in the search, alongside colleagues from NPAS, South Central Ambulance Service, and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire Service. We will provide further updates when we are able."
Heatwave Conditions
The search comes as the UK experienced its hottest June day on record, with a temperature of 36.1°C recorded in Gosport, Hampshire. The heatwave likely prompted many to seek relief in open water, but such activities carry significant risks, especially in unsupervised areas.
Testwood Lakes is a popular spot for walkers and nature enthusiasts, but swimming is not officially permitted. The lakes are part of a nature reserve managed by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust.
