Adam Ramsay-Peaty secured a bronze medal in the Men's 50m breaststroke final at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, then spoke candidly about the difficulties he has endured in recent years.
The 31-year-old swimmer said it had been "pretty tough to get that speed back" and admitted he will "have to learn this experience as a whole really".
Struggles and Perspective
Ramsay-Peaty told reporters: "I think for me just getting back to the enjoyment of racing. I've really enjoyed tonight. I made a few errors but you can train the hardest in the world and you can work the hardest in the world but it doesn't really matter unless you're race polished and I'm not."
He added: "I'm not going to be too hard on myself because I'm incredibly proud of the journey I've been on my whole career. Even in this room, 12 years ago I'm a different man, well, I wasn't even a man then. Now look at me I've got nearly a six year old and a daughter on the way in December so it's all in perspective and sometimes I think the hard times are more important than the good."
His pregnant wife Holly, daughter of chef Gordon Ramsay, watched from the stands.
Family Feud
The swimmer's comments come after his estranged mother Caroline spoke publicly about their fallout. The rift emerged before Ramsay-Peaty's wedding to Holly, when his parents were uninvited.
Caroline said on Instagram: "I forgive people but that doesn't mean I accept their behaviour or trust them. I forgive them for me, so I can let go and move on with my life."
She admitted she had spoken to a national newspaper early in the dispute but insisted she has not discussed him publicly since, hinting at a desire to reconcile. "We continue to support Adam from afar. He's our son who we love, whom we supported to reach his aspirations. Our love, our time, our sacrifices were given freely with no expectation of financial reward just genuinely given with the love as any mother and father would do for their child," she shared.
After Ramsay-Peaty's earlier bronze in the 100m breaststroke, he had tearfully said the highly publicised family rift "has taken its toll" but maintained it was "no fault of my own".
