Keir Starmer has been dealt another spectacular blow (Image: Getty). Sky News was abruptly interrupted for a breaking news bulletin as UK defence secretary John Healey announced his resignation. The move is sure to be a huge blow to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, with Healey referencing his 'inability to commit resources the country needs amid rising threats'.
The host announced on air, while airing the PSNI news conference, saying: 'We just have to interrupt that news conference by the PSNI, we're getting news that the UK defence secretary John Healey has resigned his position. This is just reaching us from Westminster. Let's go to Deborah Haynes and speak to our correspondent about this developing story. What do you know?' as Deborah went to read out his resignation letter on air.
As part of the two-page letter, Mr Healey outlined 'the scale of the challenge' at hand, admitting that 'The excellent and extensive cross-government work that completed in January – overseen by you, me and the Chancellor – confirmed the scale of the challenge and the rising demands on defence,' he wrote. 'Since then, you have been unable, and the Treasury has been unwilling, to commit the resources that the nation needs to defend the country at this time of rising threats.'
