Jurgen Klopp is in the running for the Germany job following Julian Nagelsmann's departure after a disappointing World Cup campaign. The 59-year-old, currently global head of football for Red Bull, previously stated he might never manage again but has been linked to three specific roles.
Klopp's Three Potential Return Jobs
According to Miroslav Tanjga, who played with Klopp at Mainz, the former Liverpool manager has two wishes: to coach the German national team and Real Madrid. Klopp also confirmed on the Diary of a CEO podcast that he would never coach another English club besides Liverpool, saying, "I said I will never coach a different team in England, so that means, if [I did return], then it's Liverpool. Theoretically. It's possible."
Germany's World Cup Exit and Nagelsmann's Departure
Germany were knocked out by Paraguay on penalties in the round of 32, marking their third straight World Cup without a knockout win since 2014. Nagelsmann announced his resignation on Friday, stating, "I've done a lot of thinking in the days since our elimination... The decision was anything but easy for me. My top priority has always been the team's success. After such a bitter disappointment, they deserve the chance for a fresh start."
Current Status of Klopp's Options
Liverpool have appointed Andoni Iraola as head coach, and Real Madrid have reappointed Jose Mourinho. Klopp turned down the Germany job in 2023 but is now reportedly interested. His agent Marc Kosicke said, "Jurgen feels very connected to this country... He feels a sense of obligation, that he couldn't always say no to the job."
Klopp's Previous Statements
Klopp left Liverpool in 2024 citing a lack of energy. Tanjga believes he will eventually become Germany coach: "At some point, I think he'll become the German coach."
