The left-wing party founded by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana has announced a shortlist of four potential names for its members to choose from: Your Party, Our Party, Popular Alliance, and For The Many. The decision will be made by the party's 50,000 members, with the result to be announced by Corbyn at the party's first conference in Liverpool this weekend.
The party, temporarily named Your Party since its launch over the summer, has faced months of internal disputes and infighting. Disagreements between Corbyn and Sultana over the launch and handling of member-raised funds have been reported. While the party attracted independent MPs including Ayoub Khan and Shockat Adam, two others, Iqbal Mohamed and Adnan Hussain, have already left due to persistent power struggles.
More than 2,500 members, selected via a lottery system, are expected to attend the Liverpool conference. They will vote on the party's structures, programme, and organisational strategy. Key debates include whether to adopt a single leader or a collective, lay-member leadership model, and whether to support socialist independents in the 2026 English local elections.
Each of the party's MPs is scheduled to speak, alongside grassroots community organisers and left-wing politicians from across Europe. Ahead of the conference, Corbyn expressed excitement about building a 'mass, democratic, socialist party' for economic justice and peace. Sultana emphasised the party's commitment to being 'rooted in and democratically accountable to a mass movement'.
The conference coincides with the cancellation of some memberships for those belonging to other parties, such as the Socialist Workers Party. Despite this, Sultana is backed by the Socialist Unity Platform, which includes groups like the Communist Party of Great Britain.
