Sir Keir Starmer has appointed Yvette Cooper as shadow home secretary in a wide-ranging reshuffle of Labour's top team. Cooper, who previously held the role under Ed Miliband, replaces Nick Thomas-Symonds, who becomes shadow international trade secretary.
In other key moves, David Lammy has been promoted to shadow foreign secretary, replacing Lisa Nandy, who takes on a new role scrutinising Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove. Ed Miliband retains his climate change brief but loses the shadow business secretary role to Jonathan Reynolds.
Wes Streeting, who recently recovered from cancer surgery, is promoted to shadow health secretary, replacing Jonathan Ashworth, who becomes shadow work and pensions secretary. Louise Haigh moves from shadow Northern Ireland secretary to shadow transport secretary, replacing Jim McMahon. Peter Kyle is promoted to shadow Northern Ireland secretary.
The reshuffle was criticised by former shadow chancellor John McDonnell, who tweeted: "Reviving the careers of former Blairite ministers and simply reappointing existing shadow cabinet ministers to new posts does give the impression of Christmas Past, not Christmas Future."
Sir Keir said the reshuffle would give him a "smaller, more focused shadow cabinet that mirrors the shape of the government we are shadowing." The changes are expected to create notable parliamentary clashes, particularly between Yvette Cooper and Home Secretary Priti Patel.
