A woman in her 30s has died after a tree fell onto a car in north London during Storm Eunice. The incident occurred at about 16:00 GMT on Muswell Hill Road in Haringey. The woman was a passenger in the vehicle; the driver, also in his 30s, was taken to hospital for treatment.
Elsewhere in London, a man was injured when a flagstone fell from a building in Waterloo, and another man suffered a head injury after being struck by a tree in Streatham. The London Fire Brigade declared a major incident in response to the high volume of 999 calls, taking 550 calls between 10:30 and 13:00, more than the average for a full day.
Transport across the capital was severely disrupted. Most train services were suspended, and Network Rail advised passengers not to travel. The M25’s Queen Elizabeth II Bridge closed, and fallen trees blocked lanes on the A40 and M40. All flights from London City Airport were grounded, and Heathrow and Gatwick experienced cancellations and diversions.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan urged residents to stay home and travel only if essential. Haringey Council leader Peray Ahmet expressed deep sadness and extended sympathies to the woman’s family, adding that teams were working to clear debris and secure structures. Emergency shelters were opened for rough sleepers under the severe weather protocol.
