Andreea Cristea, a 31-year-old Romanian tourist, has died from injuries sustained during the Westminster terror attack on 22 March, police have confirmed. She fell from Westminster Bridge into the Thames after being struck by the attacker's vehicle, and was pulled from the water by a passing boat crew. Doctors turned off her life support on Thursday, 6 April.
In a statement released by police, Cristea's family paid tribute to her, describing her as a 'unique and life-loving person' and a 'shining ray of light'. They expressed deep gratitude to medical staff who tried to save her. Cristea was in London for a short break with her boyfriend, Andrei Burnaz, who has since been discharged from hospital.
Cristea was the fifth victim to die from the attack, in which Khalid Masood drove a Hyundai Tucson across Westminster Bridge at speeds of up to 76mph, hitting pedestrians before crashing into railings near the Palace of Westminster. He then stabbed PC Keith Palmer to death before being shot by police.
Dan Mihalache, Romania's ambassador to the UK, confirmed that Cristea suffered serious head injuries and damaged lungs. She underwent surgery to remove a blood clot from her brain in the days following the attack. The other victims were Aysha Frade, Kurt Cochran, Leslie Rhodes, and PC Keith Palmer.
