Labour MP Catherine West has declared her intention to trigger a leadership contest if no cabinet minister steps forward to challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer by Monday. Speaking on the BBC’s PM programme, West, a former junior Foreign Office minister, stated that she would seek the necessary signatures to initiate a contest if no candidate emerges from within the cabinet.
West's Ultimatum
“I’m putting people on notice – if I don’t hear by Monday morning of some leadership hopefuls, I will be asking everybody in the Parliamentary Labour Party to put a name against my name, because we need to get this ball rolling,” West said. She expressed a preference for the cabinet to conduct an internal reshuffle, allowing Starmer to take on a different role, possibly an international position, while other capable figures step forward to communicate the party’s message effectively.
Background
Catherine West, who represents Hornsey and Friern Barnet, previously served as Shadow Foreign Minister for Asia and the Pacific. Her call for a leadership change underscores ongoing tensions within the Labour Party regarding Starmer’s leadership and communication strategy.
