Waymo Unveils Futuristic Ojai Robotaxi: A Living Room on Wheels
Waymo's Ojai Robotaxi: Living Room on Wheels

Alphabet-owned Waymo has introduced the Ojai, a futuristic autonomous vehicle that resembles a 'living room on wheels' rather than a traditional car. The self-driving giant is accelerating plans to deploy next-generation robotaxis across US cities over the next year.

Design and Features

The sleek new vehicle boasts elevator-style sliding doors, a completely flat floor, oversized cabin space, and giant LED screens. Passengers can customize everything from temperature to music during their ride. Waymo states the Ojai was specifically designed to feel 'less like a car and more like an oasis on wheels.'

Accessibility and Inclusivity

Inside, the vehicle prioritizes accessibility with low step-in entry, integrated support handles, braille features, and screen-reader compatibility for visually impaired riders.

Rollout and Expansion

Waymo will begin offering free public rides in the Ojai within weeks in San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles as part of a limited rollout. Later this year, the service will expand to additional cities, including Denver, Las Vegas, and San Diego. The company aims to manufacture 'tens of thousands' of autonomous vehicles annually at its Arizona factory.

Sixth-Generation Technology

The Ojai is the first vehicle to feature Waymo's new sixth-generation autonomous driving system, enabling it to handle more difficult weather conditions, including snow, while scaling operations nationwide.

Industry Leadership

Waymo, originally Google's secretive self-driving car project launched in 2009, has become the clear leader in the robotaxi industry. The company has completed over 20 million fully autonomous rides across more than 11 cities and currently operates driverless ride-hailing services in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami, and Orlando through its own app. Services are also available in Atlanta and Austin via Uber partnerships.

Future Plans

International expansion is accelerating, with London and Tokyo expected to receive Waymo services in 2026. The company recently raised $16 billion, valuing it at roughly $126 billion, and plans to expand into over 20 additional cities next year. Waymo claims its autonomous driving system has logged 127 million driverless miles and reduced serious injury crashes by 90% compared to human drivers. Currently, Waymo provides more than 400,000 paid robotaxi rides weekly across the US.

Public Access

For now, only select riders in initial rollout cities can test the Ojai. Broader public access will open later this year. Interested consumers can sign up through the Waymo app's 'Trusted Tester' program.
