UK Foreign Office Updates Turkey Travel Advice for British Tourists
UK Foreign Office Turkey Travel Advice Update

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has revised its travel guidance for British nationals planning holidays to Turkey, just ahead of the May half-term period when many UK residents will be travelling abroad.

Turkey: A Perennial Favourite

Turkey remains a top destination for British holidaymakers, drawn by its affordable prices, Mediterranean climate, expansive resorts, golden beaches, and crystal-clear waters. Cities like Istanbul offer a rich blend of historic landmarks, mosques, and bustling bazaars. Istanbul, uniquely straddling Europe and Asia, is particularly popular for its striking architecture, vibrant street food, and ancient sites such as the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia.

Warning for Football Fans

The FCDO has specifically warned football fans travelling to Istanbul for the UEFA Europa League Final on Wednesday, 20 May, between Aston Villa FC and SC Freiburg. The advice urges supporters to plan their movements carefully, arrive early at the dedicated fan zone in Gezi Park, Taksim Square, or the stadium, follow local authorities' instructions, and safeguard personal belongings, especially passports, in crowds and on public transport. Additional details are available on the Aston Villa FC website and the UEFA event guide.

Passport Requirements

All travellers should ensure their passports are valid: the expiry date must be at least 150 days after the arrival date, and there must be at least one blank page. Those entering via land borders should ensure officials stamp and date their passport. The FCDO warns that entry will be denied without valid documents or if using a passport reported lost or stolen. British citizen passport holders can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism or business; other passport types require a visa, and travellers should check with the Turkish Embassy or Consulate General beforehand.
