UK Deputy Ambassador to US Abruptly Leaves Post Amid Security Leak Probe
UK Deputy US Ambassador Quits Amid Leak Probe

Britain's deputy ambassador to the United States, James Roscoe, has abruptly departed from his role as the country's second most senior diplomat in Washington. Roscoe had held the position since July 2022 and previously served as acting ambassador following the dismissal of Lord Peter Mandelson, who was removed due to his connections with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

No Official Explanation Provided

No official reason has been given for Roscoe's sudden departure. However, according to The Times, Roscoe is understood to have been questioned regarding the leak of highly classified discussions that took place during a National Security Council meeting. The meeting in question involved deliberations over a US request to utilize British military bases at the onset of the Iran conflict. Details of these discussions were leaked to a journalist in March.

Foreign Office sources have indicated that senior embassy officials were among those interrogated about the leak. Roscoe, aged 49, had been considered a potential candidate to permanently succeed Lord Mandelson after temporarily stepping into the role last year. Ultimately, the position was awarded to Sir Christian Turner, but Roscoe retained his post as deputy ambassador.

Key Diplomatic Roles

Roscoe played a significant part in coordinating President Donald Trump's state visit to the United Kingdom, as well as King Charles III's recent trip to the US, which marked the 250th anniversary of American independence. He lived in Washington with his wife, actress and author Clemency Burton-Hill. The couple met in 2006 while Roscoe was assigned to the British High Commission in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Burton-Hill is also a violinist who has presented the Proms and Breakfast on BBC Radio 3, and she served as the BBC's first head of music and arts.

Before his posting to Washington, Roscoe served as the UK ambassador to the United Nations and previously acted as communications chief to the late Queen Elizabeth II. He also held the role of chief press officer in Downing Street for Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. His earlier diplomatic postings included assignments at the UN, Sierra Leone, and Iraq.

Foreign Office Statement

In a brief statement, a Foreign Office spokesman confirmed: 'James Roscoe has left his post.' During King Charles's recent visit to Washington, Roscoe praised the monarch for helping to strengthen bilateral relations. He told CNN: 'The King … can draw out those things that really pull us together,' highlighting the 'incredible' defence and economic partnerships that 'bind the US and UK.'

Controversial Remarks by Ambassador

The visit was overshadowed after remarks made by Sir Christian Turner, the current ambassador, to visiting sixth-form students were leaked to the Financial Times. In the recording, Sir Christian downplayed the so-called 'Special Relationship' between the UK and US, stating that America's only such connection is 'probably Israel.' He also noted how the Epstein scandal had 'brought down a senior member of the royal family, a British ambassador to Washington, potentially the Prime Minister, and yet here in the US, it really hasn't touched anybody.' He further suggested that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer could be 'brought down' by the row over his predecessor, pointing to the May elections as a potential breaking point.

Sir Christian's comments were reportedly made during a question-and-answer session with students on diplomacy and politics and were never intended as an official statement of government policy. Sir Keir Starmer later insisted that he would not sack the loose-lipped ambassador, saying he was the 'least of my problems.'
