Thomas Tuchel has expressed surprise at Harry Maguire's public response to being omitted from England's World Cup squad. The Manchester United defender was one of several high-profile players left out of the 26-man travelling group for the tournament in North America, announced on Friday.
Maguire, 33, took to social media and spoke to talkSPORT to confirm his omission and voice his disappointment. 'I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had. I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision,' he wrote. His family also publicly criticised the decision.
Tuchel, speaking at a press conference at Wembley, said: 'I was a bit surprised... but I respect his personality a lot, I respect his quality a lot. He had an outstanding season. I can see the reason behind the disappointment.' The manager noted that Maguire had expressed his feelings in a private conversation.
Maguire, a 66-cap international with three major tournaments experience, had returned to the squad in March after an 18-month absence but was considered fifth-choice centre-back. Tuchel opted for Marc Guehi, John Stones, Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn and Jarell Quansah instead.
Tuchel defended his decision, stating: 'We stood firmly with our central defenders that carried us through September, October, November. Some of them are part of the leadership group that took ownership and set the standards high. It was a decision for these 26 players, even if it feels that it’s against individuals.'
