England manager Thomas Tuchel has revealed that several young players not included in the 26-man World Cup squad will still play a role in the team's preparations. The Three Lions will travel to the United States for a training camp, and Tuchel confirmed that Liverpool's Rio Ngumoha, Bournemouth's Alex Scott, and Fulham's Josh King will join the squad. A fourth unnamed player is also expected to be added once confirmed.
Tuchel's Squad Announcement
Tuchel announced his final squad on Friday, with notable absentees including Harry Maguire, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, and others. Surprise inclusions were Djed Spence and Ivan Toney. The manager explained his reasoning to the press, highlighting the importance of integrating young talents.
"We will take some young players out who will train with us and keep the squad in the size that we need," Tuchel said. "We have all the possibilities for the two friendly matches to take care about the minutes and the load off the players. This will be Alex Scott, Rio Ngumoha, Josh King, and there will be one more player which we cannot name because it is not confirmed yet."
Young Talents to Shine
Tuchel praised the youngsters' commitment, especially Alex Scott, who was on the preliminary 55-man list but missed the final cut. "The reaction was outstanding, the commitment, the wish to be in pre-camp and to just be a step closer to the team showed me his character," Tuchel added. "I am delighted he is with us because he was a close call and gets a chance to take a step closer and to get a cap."
The extra bodies are necessary as several Arsenal players—Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Eberechi Eze, and Noni Madueke—will join late due to their involvement in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain on May 30 in Budapest.
Goalkeeping Cover
Veteran Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele will provide cover for Crystal Palace's Dean Henderson, who will also arrive late due to the Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano on May 27 in Leipzig. "I think Dean is not an issue, we have Jason Steele in camp," Tuchel said. "We can start with three goalkeepers and we have four." Jordan Pickford remains England's first-choice, with Manchester City's James Trafford as the other option.
England's World Cup Plans
England will fly to Florida on June 1 for initial preparations before moving to their main base in Kansas City. The tournament begins on June 11, with England's first match against Croatia in Arlington, Texas, on June 17, followed by group games against Ghana and Panama.
