In an exclusive extract from his new memoir, Pete Doherty has opened up about his tumultuous relationship with supermodel Kate Moss, describing clandestine meetings, matching tattoos, and a romance marred by drug use and tabloid scrutiny.
Doherty recalled early encounters where the pair would meet in disguise, with Moss—despite being a multimillionaire—agreeing to take a bus with him. 'We got dressed up in disguise, put on wigs, and jumped on the bus around London,' he wrote. The Libertines frontman also insisted they get matching tattoos within the first week, saying it was 'more of an insecurity thing on my part.'
The couple's relationship became a 'running battle' over Doherty's drug use and Moss's concerns about her image. 'Kate’s big thing was “not taking her for a cunt”,' he said. The situation escalated in 2005 when photos emerged appearing to show Moss snorting cocaine during a Babyshambles recording session. The images, published by the Mirror under the headline 'High As a Kate', were reportedly worth £300,000.
Doherty speculated that the leak may have been orchestrated by his acquaintance Paul Roundhill, who he claimed was always 'trying to set things up with the papers.' The scandal cost Moss lucrative contracts, including a reputed £4m-a-year deal with H&M. She subsequently entered rehab at the Meadows in Arizona, with Doherty agreeing to follow suit.
However, Doherty admitted to smuggling drugs into the facility and absconding after two weeks when Moss failed to visit him for a planned helicopter trip to the Grand Canyon. 'When Kate found out I hadn’t finished the treatment, she told me point-blank that that was it,' he said. The split was widely reported, with Moss quoted in the Mirror saying, 'I wish I’d never met him.'
