A new poll has found that support for President Donald Trump's war with Iran among his core MAGA supporters has fallen sharply, with only 37% now backing continued conflict if it raises inflation. This is a drop from 50% in May, according to the Politico survey.
The poll reveals growing frustration within Trump's base, with nearly one in five MAGA supporters now wanting the war to end regardless of domestic costs. Among non-MAGA Trump voters, only 21% support the war if it increases consumer prices.
A White House source described the situation as "maximum frustration", noting that "the American people just will not support the kind of escalation it would take at this point". However, White House assistant press secretary Olivia Wales said Trump makes decisions based on "the best interests of the American people", not opinion polls.
The poll also showed that 57% of MAGA voters and 63% of non-MAGA Trump voters blame the war for higher petrol prices, which have reached an average of $4.06 per gallon, up 29% from last year.
Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth faced a heated Senate hearing on Tuesday, where he requested an additional $67 billion for the Pentagon. Democratic Senator Gary Peters accused Hegseth of lacking a strategy, prompting a sharp exchange.
