Donald Trump has stated that the decision to remain in office rests with Sir Keir Starmer, as he reiterated his criticism of the UK's energy strategy, accusing the Prime Minister of 'windmilling the country to death'.
The US President also urged Britain to adopt a firmer approach on immigration, arguing that Europe is suffering significantly due to current policies.
Speaking at the White House before departing for a state visit to China, where he is scheduled to hold talks with President Xi Jinping, Mr Trump launched his latest attack on the British Government.
He has previously described the focus on renewable energy over oil and gas extraction in the North Sea as 'absolutely crazy', and has argued that wind turbines are economically damaging.
Sir Keir is currently facing a challenging political landscape, with a Labour rebellion following poor local election results last week.
When questioned about the Prime Minister's future, Mr Trump said: 'Well, my advice to him has always been, open up your oil in the North Sea. You have one of the greatest oil finds anywhere in the world, and you are not using it, they are not allowed to use it, and it is among the best oils in the world.'
He added: 'Open up your oil in the North Sea and get tough on immigration. Europe is being very, very hurt by immigration all over Europe.'
Pressed on whether Sir Keir should stay or go, Mr Trump responded: 'That is up to him, but I told him from day one, you are getting killed on energy. You are windmilling your country to death. Open up the North Sea. You have one of the greatest sources of energy in the world.'
