President Donald Trump expressed unease on Friday over the House Oversight Committee's deposition of former President Bill Clinton, part of an ongoing investigation into the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. Speaking to reporters before departing for Texas and a weekend at his Florida home, Trump said, 'I like him and I don’t like seeing him deposed.' He added, 'They certainly went after me more than that.'
Clinton, in a prepared statement to lawmakers, criticised the panel for subpoenaing his wife, Hillary Clinton, noting she had no connection to Epstein. 'She had nothing to do with Jeffrey Epstein. Nothing. She has no memory of even meeting him,' Clinton stated. He maintained he had 'no idea of the crimes Epstein was committing' and that he 'saw nothing and did nothing wrong'.
Trump also suggested a potential 'friendly takeover' of Cuba, claiming his administration is in talks with the Cuban government, which is struggling under a US trade embargo and recent oil restrictions. 'We could very well end up having a friendly takeover of Cuba after many, many years,' Trump said. He mentioned that Senator Marco Rubio is handling discussions at a high level.
The comments come after a fatal incident in Cuban waters, where security forces fired on a Florida-registered speedboat, killing four people, including at least one American. Another US citizen was injured. Cuba's deputy foreign minister, Carlos Fernández de Cossío, said Havana will request information from the US about those aboard. A US official confirmed the casualties and noted that some crew members may be green card holders. Rubio stated the Department of Homeland Security and Coast Guard are investigating.
