Donald Trump completed a three-day trip to China, his first since 2017, where he received a grand welcome and held bilateral meetings with President Xi Jinping. Shortly after departing to return to the US, Trump took to Truth Social to justify his $400 million White House ballroom project, stating, "China has a Ballroom, and so should the U.S.A.!" Trump announced the ballroom is "under construction, ahead of schedule," with an anticipated opening around September 2028.
Trump's China Visit and Ballroom Justification
During their discussions, Trump and Xi addressed the Iran war, with Xi offering mediation, and also touched on Taiwan, trade relations, and efforts to curb fentanyl flow. Trump's remarks on the ballroom came after a lavish reception in Beijing, which he contrasted with the lack of a suitable ballroom in the White House. The former president has long advocated for a grand ballroom, arguing it is necessary for state functions and diplomatic events.
Domestic Challenges Await Trump
Trump returns to a challenging domestic political landscape marked by an unpopular Iran war, rising fuel prices, high inflation, and low approval ratings. The ballroom project, already criticized for its cost, faces renewed scrutiny as the nation grapples with economic pressures. Trump's Truth Social tirade from Air Force One emphasized his determination to see the project through, despite opposition.
The trip to China also highlighted Trump's ongoing efforts to maintain a strong relationship with Xi, even as tensions persist over trade and security issues. The ballroom, however, remains a symbolic focal point of Trump's ambitions for a second term, with completion targeted for 2028.
