Former President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday. The Republican presidential candidate was speaking at the Butler Farm Show Grounds when a gunman opened fire from a nearby building.
Trump had just said, 'take a look what happened,' when shots rang out. Security personnel quickly surrounded and shielded him as more bangs sounded. A New York Times photographer captured the moment a bullet appeared to fly past the former president.
Despite being bloodied from his ear, Trump raised a defiant fist and mouthed 'fight, fight, fight' to supporters as he was rushed off stage. Security personnel then guided him through the crowd to a waiting vehicle.
The attack resulted in the death of one spectator and critical injuries to two others. The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot and killed by the Secret Service.
Trump, who returned to New York after the rally, called on Americans to 'stand united' in the wake of the attack. The incident has heightened security concerns as the presidential campaign continues.
