Among these posts, which included comments on his new ballroom and criticisms of Joe Biden, Trump launched a bizarre attack on Pope Leo. As the spiritual leader to 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide, the Pope faced accusations from Trump of being weak on crime and ineffective in foreign policy, seemingly in response to the Pope's criticism of Trump's war in Iran.
Swift Backlash from Christian Supporters
Just 46 minutes after the attack on Pope Leo, Trump escalated the situation by sharing an AI-generated picture of himself depicted as Jesus, complete with a holy glow. This move horrified many Christians, leading to a swift and damning backlash from both Catholic and evangelical supporters who are typically among his most dedicated followers.
Investigative journalist Sarah Posner, in a discussion with Annie Kelly, highlighted the critical role these voters play in Trump's political success. She explained, "Trump never would have become the Republican nominee in 2016 and would never have become president in 2016 or in 2024 without his white evangelical supporters." Posner noted that for decades, the Christian right, including evangelicals and some Catholic allies, has been a central bloc in electing Republican presidents.
Enduring Support Despite Controversy
Despite the anger over the AI Jesus post and the ongoing feud with the pope throughout the week, Trump's rightwing evangelical supporters are unlikely to abandon him immediately. Posner pointed out that many in this group believe "sometimes God chooses an unlikely figure to lead a nation at a critical juncture in its history." She added, "I think for them to abandon him or to erode their support for him will take some time."
