Argentina defender Cristian Romero refused to shake hands with US President Donald Trump during the medal presentation after his side's 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The Tottenham centre-back, who was substituted in the 70th minute with an apparent injury, shook hands with FIFA president Gianni Infantino and Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum but deliberately avoided engaging with Trump, who was overseeing the ceremony.
The crowd had already voiced their displeasure at Trump's presence, with boos greeting him as he walked onto the pitch alongside Infantino. The ambient noise rose from 78 decibels to 84 decibels during the jeering.
Trump later attempted to position himself at the edge of Spain's trophy lift for a photo, but Infantino subtly steered him away. The US president had previously been in the spotlight after Chelsea's Club World Cup win at the same stadium last summer, joining captain Reece James to lift the trophy.
Romero, a key figure in Argentina's 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar, endured a frustrating evening as Ferran Torres scored a 106th-minute winner to secure Spain's second world title.
