A police chase through Westminster ended in chaos when a wanted man crashed into an elderly pedestrian, a police motorcyclist and a bus near Trafalgar Square. The incident occurred just after 2pm on the Strand, a busy tourist area opposite Charing Cross Station.
Witness Fran Perrow described the scene: 'First of all, there was a big police chase and there were at least seven police vehicles. Suddenly there were a lot of police sirens, there were a lot of horns, tourists were jumping back off the road on to the pavement.' She added that a man dressed in black was seen running down the road.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a man in his 70s was hit by the car but declined treatment after being assessed by paramedics. The driver fled on foot but was later apprehended by officers.
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of burglary, failing to stop, dangerous driving and was wanted on recall to prison. He is being held at a central London police station.
