Several pubs near the Old Bailey are set to close on Thursday following police advice, ahead of a hearing for right-wing activist Tommy Robinson. Bar staff confirmed the closures, anticipating protests during the court appearance.
Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, has been on bail since August after the Court of Appeal quashed his 13-month sentence for breaching reporting restrictions. He now faces a rerun of the original hearing before the Recorder of London, Nicholas Hilliard.
More than 1,500 people have indicated on Facebook they intend to protest in support of Robinson, while a counter-demonstration by anti-racist groups has attracted 160 supporters. Previous demonstrations linked to Robinson have resulted in violence, including clashes that injured 21 police officers in June.
Liam Dugglevy, assistant manager of the Viaduct Tavern on Newgate Street, said his pub would delay opening until the early evening. Other pubs confirmed they would remain closed on police advice, while some planned to stay open.
A City of London police spokesman said officers were speaking to local businesses and advised precautions such as using plastic glasses. The force has plans to police the demonstration, he added.
