Keir Starmer Under Pressure After Labour Suffers Heavy Election Losses
Starmer Faces Calls to Resign After Labour Election Rout

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is under mounting pressure to announce a timeline for his resignation after his Labour Party suffered devastating losses in elections across England, Wales, and Scotland. With most results counted following Thursday's vote, Labour lost over 1,400 seats on English councils, which are responsible for delivering local services. The party also suffered a historic defeat in the Welsh Parliament election, ending a century of dominance, and lost ground in the Scottish Parliament.

Election Results Show Fragmented Political Landscape

The elections, the largest since Starmer took power in mid-2024, revealed a shattered two-party system. Reform UK, the right-wing populist party led by Nigel Farage, won the most votes, while the Greens, Conservatives, Labour, and Liberal Democrats trailed closely behind. Labour faced challenges from multiple opponents, including Reform UK, the Greens, and pro-independence parties in Wales and Scotland.

Growing Calls for Starmer's Resignation

Although Starmer does not face a general election for three years, an increasing number of Labour MPs want him to set a departure date, fearing he is too politically damaged to recover. Debbie Abrahams, Labour MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, said Starmer must "put the country first" and suggested he should step down within months. "We have to recognise the dangers that we're in now; on this trajectory it doesn't look good," she stated.

Starmer retains public support from senior ministers, including potential challengers Wes Streeting and Angela Rayner. However, the favored replacement for many in Labour, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, is not in Parliament and would require a by-election to return.

Starmer Vows to Continue

In a Guardian opinion piece, Starmer acknowledged the results were "very tough" and that lessons must be learned. He rejected calls to veer left or right, insisting Labour must "bring together a broad political movement." He argued that while the party must respond to voters' messages, it should not tack to the extremes.

Critics within Labour argue that Starmer has failed to effectively counter Reform UK or the Greens, whose leader Zack Polanski has gained popularity. However, others warn that changing leaders mid-term could anger voters, as seen when the Conservatives cycled through four prime ministers between 2016 and 2022 and were heavily punished at the subsequent election.

Conservative Losses Too

The Conservatives, under new leader Kemi Badenoch, also fared poorly, losing over 500 councillors and giving ground in Scotland and Wales.
