Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed he will campaign for potential leadership challenger Andy Burnham in the upcoming Makerfield by-election, as the Prime Minister seeks to shift focus back to his government's record amid ongoing leadership speculation.
Starmer's Pledge to Campaign
Speaking to reporters during a visit to Essex on Thursday, Sir Keir stated his intention to support Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham in the June 18 contest. He urged the entire Labour movement to unite behind the campaign, emphasising that the by-election represents a direct contest between Labour and Reform UK.
"Yes, and I've said to the whole Labour movement that I want everybody to be involved in the campaign, whatever other discussions are going on, it's really important – that's a straight fight between Labour and Reform," Sir Keir said.
He added: "I want to be part of that, of course I do, and I want everybody to be part of that, but also by being clear about the steps we've taken to stabilise the economy."
Government's Record Highlighted
The Prime Minister sought to draw attention to his government's achievements, pointing to recent economic data showing UK real GDP growth of 0.6% in the first quarter, falling NHS waiting lists, and a drop in net migration to its lowest level since the start of the pandemic.
"There's been a lot going on in the last two weeks, but what is important for me to draw out is that actually the last week, in terms of what we've delivered, is really significant," he said.
Sir Keir's comments come after a turbulent period for his premiership, with calls from Labour MPs for him to step down and a series of resignations from junior government ranks last week.
Cost-of-Living Announcements
On Thursday, the Prime Minister attempted to regain control of the political agenda by unveiling a package of cost-of-living measures. Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced a temporary cut in VAT on tickets for theme parks, zoos, and museums from 20% to 5% during the summer holidays, aimed at easing the impact of the Iran war.
Other measures include free bus travel for children throughout August, a 10p per mile increase in tax-free mileage rates, reduced import tariffs on over 100 food products, a £350 million critical chemicals resilience fund, and a £120 million fund to support the ceramics sector.
Burnham's Campaign and Leadership Speculation
In response to Sir Keir's pledge, a spokesperson for Andy Burnham said: "Anyone who wants to embrace Andy's campaign message is welcome on the campaign." Allies of the mayor have suggested he may not immediately launch a bid for the Labour leadership if he successfully returns to Westminster, but a contest is widely expected following his call for a "new path" and promise to "change Labour."
Meanwhile, former health secretary Wes Streeting, who resigned last week urging the Prime Minister to go, has set out plans for a wealth tax that would equalise capital gains tax with income tax, potentially positioning himself for a leadership bid.
