Abigail Spanberger has been elected governor of Virginia, becoming the first woman to hold the office in the state's more than 250-year history. The former congresswoman and CIA officer defeated Republican Winsome Earle-Sears in Tuesday's election, breaking a barrier that had stood through 74 previous governors.
Spanberger, 46, campaigned on a platform focused on the cost of living, public service, and protecting democratic institutions. She also sought to target Donald Trump's policies rather than the president himself, a strategy that appeared to resonate with moderate voters in the commonwealth.
Born in Red Bank, New Jersey, in 1979, Spanberger moved to a Richmond suburb at age 13. Her father was an army veteran and law enforcement officer, and her mother a nurse and volunteer. After earning a degree in French literature from the University of Virginia, she worked briefly as a substitute teacher before joining the US Postal Inspection Service, where she investigated narcotics, child predators, and money launderers. She then served as a CIA case officer specialising in counter-terrorism.
In 2014, Spanberger and her husband Adam, an engineer, were considering a foreign posting when their eldest daughter pointed to Virginia on a globe. The family moved back, where Spanberger volunteered with Moms Demand Action and started a Girl Scout troop. In 2017, she ran for Congress in a district that had not elected a Democrat in half a century, winning and later becoming known for her bipartisan approach as part of the centrist Blue Dog Coalition.
Her campaign emphasised support for education and infrastructure, and her national security background lent credibility to her message. She consistently argued that local school districts should decide on transgender participation in sports, casting her opponent as out of step with the middle of the Virginia electorate. Spanberger's victory marks a significant milestone, with supporters hailing her as a trailblazer.
