John Swinney has declared that the SNP have “won emphatically” in the Scottish Parliament election. With 70 of Scotland's 73 constituencies having declared their results, Mr Swinney’s party secured 55 seats at the time of publishing. The final regional list seats for Holyrood are anticipated later on Friday evening.
Swinney’s Victory Speech
Addressing supporters, Mr Swinney stated: “Once again the people of Scotland have put their trust in us. However you voted today, I promise that I will be a First Minister for all of Scotland.” He emphasized his commitment to serving the entire nation, regardless of political allegiance.
Call for Respect Between Governments
Mr Swinney also directed remarks towards Downing Street, asserting that the UK Government has “a lot of listening to do.” He called for a renewed respect between the Scottish and UK governments, noting that relations had “soured” during the campaign. “Now the Labour Government has just been hammered in Scotland and I hope that lesson is learned in Downing Street that there’s now got to be respect for the Scottish Government exercised by the UK Government,” he said.
The election results are seen as a significant setback for Labour, which suffered a historic defeat in Wales while Reform UK surged in England. The outcome underscores the continuing dominance of the SNP in Scottish politics and raises questions about the future of intergovernmental relations.
