Royal Engagements Halved Since 2012 Amid Slimming Plans

The number of official royal engagements has fallen dramatically, with working members of the Royal Family carrying out just 2,273 duties last year, compared to 4,127 in 2012—the busiest year of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. This represents a drop of nearly 45% over 14 years, driven by a deliberate move toward a slimmed-down monarchy and recent health challenges faced by senior royals.

Health Battles and Changing Priorities

Both King Charles and the Princess of Wales were diagnosed with cancer in 2024, forcing them to temporarily step back from engagements at the start of the year. They gradually returned to duties later in 2024. The King, now 77, and Queen Camilla, 78, completed 708 official engagements last year. By comparison, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip carried out 808 duties in 2003, when she was also 77 and he turned 82.

Prince William and Princess Kate have adopted a different approach, focusing on long-term campaign initiatives and spending around 16 weeks each year away from official duties during school holidays to be with their children, George, Charlotte, and Louis, according to the Observer. This has contributed to fewer engagements overall.

Reduction in Working Royals

The number of working royals has decreased significantly. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from royal roles and relocated to America in 2020-2021. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was also forced to step back following allegations surrounding his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Additionally, older royals such as the Duke of Kent (90), and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester (81 and 80 respectively) have reduced their public appearances.

Sovereign Grant Increase

The decline in engagements comes as the Sovereign Grant—funded by taxpayers—is set to reach £100 million from 2027, up from £31 million in 2012 (equivalent to £45.8 million when adjusted for inflation). Palace aides have previously suggested that King Charles and Queen Camilla compare favourably with the late Queen and Prince Philip at similar stages of life in terms of yearly engagements.
