Veteran actor Robert Powell, best known for his role in Jesus of Nazareth, has found himself in a heated dispute with Westminster Council over a Lime bike rental station positioned near his £3 million London home.
The 79-year-old actor claims the bike rack, installed just outside his property in St John's Wood, causes excessive noise and obstructs pedestrians. He has demanded its immediate removal, calling it a 'nuisance' to residents.
Council Stands Firm on Sustainable Transport
Westminster Council, however, has defended the bike hire scheme as a vital part of London's sustainable transport strategy. A spokesperson stated that Lime bikes provide an eco-friendly alternative to cars and are widely used by locals and tourists alike.
'We carefully consider all locations for bike racks to ensure they meet transport needs while minimising disruption,' the council said in response to Powell's complaints.
Neighbours Divided Over Bike Station
While Powell insists the rack is poorly placed, not all residents agree. Some neighbours argue that the bikes offer convenience and support green initiatives. 'It's a small price to pay for reducing traffic and pollution,' said one local.
Lime, the company behind the bike-sharing scheme, has also weighed in, stating they work closely with councils to ensure their services benefit communities without causing undue disturbance.
As the debate continues, Powell remains adamant that the council should prioritise residents' quality of life over commercial bike hire schemes.
