Singer Lionel Richie has praised King Charles III's address to the US Congress, describing the monarch as a 'wise friend' offering advice on global issues. Richie, the first global ambassador for the King's Trust, made the comments at a New York reception celebrating the charity's work.
The King's speech on Capitol Hill covered topics including support for Ukraine, environmental threats, and the importance of the rule of law. The New York Times noted subtle rebuttals to President Trump's policies, particularly on Nato and checks and balances.
Richie was among celebrities including Donatella Versace, Anna Wintour, Stella McCartney, and Iman at the Christie's auction house event. The King joked about his cancer diagnosis, saying 'as we look to the future, I won't see the long-distance future', urging support for the next generation.
The royal couple began their day commemorating 9/11 victims at the New York memorial, leaving a message of solidarity. Queen Camilla later met actress Sarah Jessica Parker at a literature event, with Parker calling the visit 'great for all New Yorkers'.
The four-day state visit concludes Thursday in Virginia, marking the 250th anniversary of US independence. The King will meet indigenous communities and conservationists, while the Queen visits a horse racing farm.
