Angela Rayner has issued a critical statement following Labour's historic defeat in the local elections, urging Sir Keir Starmer to implement significant changes. She asserted that the party's current approach “isn’t working” and that this “may be our last chance” to alter its direction.
Rayner's warning to Starmer
Rayner highlighted the cost-of-living crisis as a primary concern for voters and warned against Labour becoming a party for the well-off rather than working people. She proposed a range of policy shifts, including immediate measures to reduce household costs, Fair Pay Agreements, increased social housing, and greater public ownership of services.
Criticism of candidate blocking
Rayner also criticised the decision to block Andy Burnham as a Labour candidate, advocating for the party to embrace successful local agendas and bring its “best players into Parliament”.
In a full statement, Rayner attacked Starmer's failure and Labour's need to change, stressing that the party must reconnect with working-class voters or face further decline.
