Angela Rayner reportedly turned down an offer from Sir Keir Starmer to become health secretary, according to The Times. The former deputy prime minister was approached by Downing Street following Wes Streeting's resignation, but her team indicated she was not interested in the role.
Ms Rayner had earlier announced she had settled her tax affairs with HMRC after a stamp duty dispute over her seaside apartment. She did not speak directly to the Prime Minister about the offer.
Downing Street later confirmed that James Murray would take over as Health Secretary. The development comes as Sir Keir faces a leadership challenge after a poor showing in the May elections, with some reports suggesting he is considering whether to defend his position.
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is also seeking to return to Westminster by running in the Makerfield by-election. Sir Keir has publicly vowed to support the Labour candidate against Reform UK.
