The deputy Labour leader issued a statement confirming her backing for Starmer, following speculation that she and other senior figures were positioning themselves for a potential leadership bid.
The move comes after a difficult week for Starmer, with around 40 Labour MPs reportedly calling on him to set a date to step down. However, Rayner’s supporters insisted she was not actively seeking the leadership but was prepared if circumstances changed. A source close to Rayner said she believed Starmer should remain as leader.
Other potential contenders, including Wes Streeting and Andy Burnham, have also been mentioned as possible successors. Streeting’s allies said he was not planning to challenge Starmer but was preparing for a contest if the situation deteriorated. Burnham’s backers have been urging him to return to parliament, though he has not yet signalled an intention to do so.
Starmer is expected to deliver a speech on Monday outlining his vision for the country, focusing on economic growth, defence, and relations with Europe. He will argue that incremental change is insufficient to meet the challenges facing Britain. Business Secretary Peter Kyle acknowledged that the government had focused too much on problems and needed to show boldness.
