Prince William has been praised for helping to break the stigma around periods after discussing menstrual health with young recipients of The Diana Legacy Award at the SXSW London festival in Shoreditch.
Period equity activist Vivi Lin asked the Prince of Wales whether he had talked about periods with his children, particularly his daughter. He replied: “I know I will have to one day, but I might need my wife to help me with that.” Lin, founder of With Red and The Period Museum, said: “Hearing him say that he knows he needs to talk to his daughter, and that he also knows he needs help from his family … will really encourage a lot of people who are ready or not ready yet to talk to their children about periods.”
William also discussed the need to consider women’s cycles in competitive sport, noting that UK women’s football teams are tailoring training schedules for female players. Lin said: “He shared about how the UK's women's sports, especially football, are changing how people are tailor-making different kinds of training schedules for the female players.”
In a separate conversation, William told Legacy Award winners that despite societal divisions, “there's actually way more that connects us”. He said the key things everyone cares about are “safety, love, happiness, health and respect”, and that grassroots leaders are “the beating heart of the country”.
