The Prince and Princess of Wales have hosted a royal garden party this afternoon to celebrate Britain's frontline workers. Prince William and Kate attended the event in the gardens of Buckingham Palace on Friday, representing King Charles.
The party honours workers from across frontline sectors, including emergency services, volunteers, and charity workers. The King and Queen held a similar event earlier this week, joined by the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, the Princess Royal, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.
Grey Skies but Warm Spirits
Today's party took place under grey but dry skies, following the King's similar event earlier this week. Every summer, the King and royal family host a series of garden parties in London and one at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Scotland.
A Tradition of Recognition
Historically, these parties served as presentation events for debutantes of high society, but now they recognise and reward public service. The party begins with the national anthem, after which members of the royal family walk among the lawns to greet guests.
Today marks the second garden party of the year, with a third event at the palace scheduled for Tuesday, May 12. This is a breaking news story and is being updated.
