An investigation has been launched into allegations that Metropolitan police officers assigned to protect the royal family at Windsor Castle were asleep while on duty. The force confirmed that an unspecified number of officers from the royalty and specialist protection team are under scrutiny after concerns were raised.
The allegations include officers leaving their posts unattended and sleeping during shifts. Reports suggest up to 30 officers may be involved, though the Met has not confirmed a specific number. The royal family has been informed of the inquiry.
The Met’s directorate of professional standards (DPS) is leading the investigation, with the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) notified and deciding the matter will be handled locally. A spokesperson stated that the alleged behaviour falls below the high standards expected, particularly in frontline protective roles.
DPS is assessing whether any officers should be placed on restricted duties, with a decision expected before the end of next week. Buckingham Palace declined to comment, and the IOPC was unavailable.
