Plaid Cymru Leader Rhun ap Iorwerth Makes History as Wales' First Minister
Plaid Cymru Leader Becomes First Minister of Wales

Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth has been announced as the next First Minister of Wales, marking a historic milestone as the first non-Labour politician to hold the post in the Welsh Parliament's 27-year history.

Historic Election

Mr ap Iorwerth secured the most votes from Members of the Senedd (MSs) on Tuesday, succeeding Baroness Eluned Morgan, who lost her seat in last week's Senedd election and subsequently resigned as Welsh Labour leader after a devastating set of results for the party.

Plaid Cymru won the largest bloc in the election but fell short of a majority, holding 43 MSs. Mr ap Iorwerth has announced plans to form a minority government.

Support and Abstentions

His nomination was supported by the two Wales Green Party MSs. Liberal Democrat MS Jane Dodds and Welsh Labour MSs chose to abstain from the vote.

Official Confirmation Pending

Before Mr ap Iorwerth is officially confirmed as first minister, the Senedd's presiding officer will write to the King recommending that he is officially appointed. This process is expected to be completed in the coming days, allowing him to assume the role formally.
