Tensions are rising in Belfast this morning after an overnight ruling gave the Orange Order the green light to march down Garvaghy Road for the first time in almost 30 years.
The Parade Commission ruled to allow the march following an “unprecedented” late night sitting of the High Court in Belfast. The hearing concluded at 2.15am, with legal teams repeating their arguments over the contentious Drumcree parade, a notorious flashpoint of the Troubles in the 1990s.
March scheduled for 8am
The march is scheduled to go ahead as of 8am. The ruling upholds the Parade Commission's decision to permit the Orange Order to take to the streets.
Protesters begin blockade
Protesters have begun to block off the Garvaghy Road following the ruling. The blockade is understood to be underway as the march is set to proceed.
