Ontario Premier Doug Ford has installed a billboard-sized sign on the shoreline of Lake Ontario, responding to an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump that directs US federal agencies to change the lake's name to 'Lake America' on US maps, documents and databases.
Premier's response
Ford told reporters that the lake's name, which is more than 400 years old, would remain unchanged. The sign was placed on the lake's shoreline as a direct response to the US president's order.
Context of trade talks
The move comes after trade talks between the US and Canada collapsed last week, with each side blaming the other for derailing three days of intensive negotiations.
