Mayor's Wife Issues Public Apology for Teenage Social Media Activity
Rama Duwaji, the wife of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, has publicly apologized for what she described as "harmful" social media posts made during her teenage years. The illustrator's statement follows a conservative news outlet's investigation that resurfaced controversial material from her online profiles, including posts containing offensive language.
Confronting Past Language and Expressing Regret
In an interview with arts publication Hyperallergic, Duwaji expressed significant remorse about her past online behavior. "I feel a lot of shame being confronted with language I used that is so harmful to others," she stated, adding that "being 15 doesn't excuse it." The mayor's wife further acknowledged reading responses to the resurfaced posts, stating, "I understand the hurt I caused and am truly sorry."
Notably, Duwaji did not specify which particular comments she was referring to in her apology. She also did not address other, more recent social media activity concerning Israel that has drawn considerable attention as her husband works to address concerns within the city's Jewish community regarding his own criticisms of Israel's treatment of Palestinians.
Investigation Reveals Years of Controversial Online Activity
Last month, The Washington Free Beacon published findings from their examination of Duwaji's online activity across multiple platforms spanning several years. Their report highlighted posts praising female Palestinian militants involved in plane hijackings and bombings during the 1960s and early 1970s. In 2015, she shared content where another individual asserted that Tel Aviv was occupying Palestinian land and "shouldn't exist."
The investigation also documented Duwaji's use of a racial slur for Black people in what appeared to be affectionate communication with a friend, along with an abbreviated slur for gay people posted in 2013. These findings have contributed to ongoing scrutiny of the mayor's family as he navigates his leadership role in one of America's most diverse cities.
Mayor's Response and Additional Controversies
Mayor Mamdani, who previously described his wife as a "private person" without formal City Hall responsibilities, addressed questions about the specific posts his wife regretted. "She shared some of her reflections in this interview," he stated. "I won't add much to them, what I will say, however, is that she is someone of incredible integrity."
The mayor added that questions about his wife's social media history were "part and parcel" of his decision to run for office, noting that such a decision "has ramifications for those that I love."
Separately, Duwaji has faced criticism for liking an Instagram post that appeared to celebrate Hamas' October 7, 2023, surprise attack on Israel. The Free Beacon additionally reported that Duwaji provided an illustration for an essay by an author who described the October 7 attack as "spectacular" and referred to Jewish Israelis using inflammatory language.
Mamdani clarified that his wife had been commissioned to illustrate an excerpt of a book by a third party, had never engaged with or met the author, and had not seen the author's previous comments. He strongly condemned the author's rhetoric as "patently unacceptable" and "reprehensible," distancing his wife from the controversial statements while acknowledging the complex intersection of personal history, professional work, and public scrutiny facing political families.
