Lucy Powell, Labour's deputy leader, has confirmed that there will be no attempt to block Andy Burnham from standing as the party's candidate in the upcoming Makerfield by-election. Speaking at the Fire Brigades Union conference, Powell expressed her full support for Burnham's return to Parliament, stating she had it on good authority that he would be the candidate.
Powell Calls for Unity
Powell highlighted Labour's recent difficult election results and stressed the urgent need for the party to unite as “one team”. She warned against the rise of Nigel Farage, stating that Labour must take the fight to him to prevent him from potentially becoming Prime Minister. Powell called for an end to factionalism within Labour, advocating for the party to embrace all its traditions and voices to come together.
Burnham's Potential Challenge
The confirmation comes amid speculation that Burnham may launch a challenge to Keir Starmer's leadership. However, Powell's comments suggest that the party leadership is not seeking to prevent Burnham from re-entering Parliament, which could be seen as an attempt to keep potential rivals close.
Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, has been a prominent figure in Labour politics and has previously run for the party leadership. His return to Westminster could shake up the dynamics within the party, especially as Starmer faces pressure from both the left and the right of the party.
In economic news, the pound has plummeted to a one-month low following reports of Burnham plotting a challenge to Starmer, reflecting market concerns about political instability within the Labour Party.
