A devastating fire, which police are investigating as a suspected arson attack, has completely destroyed the constituency office of Labour MP Sharon Hodgson.
The blaze erupted in the early hours of Tuesday morning at the building on The Galleries in Washington, Tyne and Wear. Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 2:45 AM.
Dramatic images from the scene show the extent of the destruction, with the office's interior utterly gutted and the roof severely damaged. The building's windows were boarded up in the aftermath of the intense fire.
Major Investigation Underway
Northumbria Police have confirmed they are treating the incident as suspected arson and have launched a full-scale investigation. A cordon remains in place around the charred shell of the building as forensic officers work to determine the exact cause.
Authorities are urging any witnesses or individuals with information to come forward to assist with their enquiries.
MP's Response to the Destruction
In a statement, Mrs Hodgson, the MP for Washington and Sunderland West, expressed her profound shock and distress. She confirmed that her office was 'completely destroyed' by the flames.
The MP praised the rapid response of the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, acknowledging their efforts to control the inferno. She also stated that arrangements were being made to ensure her constituents could continue to receive support despite the catastrophic loss of the office.
This is a developing story. Further updates are expected as the police investigation continues.
