Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell experienced a second freezing episode in just over a month while speaking to reporters in Covington, Kentucky. The 81-year-old paused for more than 30 seconds when asked about his potential re-election bid in 2026.
Aides attempted to prompt the senator, but it took several more seconds for him to recover. He then answered two more questions, which had to be repeated by staff, before leaving without commenting on his health.
A spokesperson later stated that McConnell “felt momentarily lightheaded and paused during his press conference today.” A staffer told CBS News that the lawmaker “feels fine” but “will be consulting a physician prior to his next event.”
McConnell’s first freezing incident occurred on 26 July in Washington DC, where he paused mid-sentence for about 20 seconds. He later said he felt “lightheaded” but was “fine.”
McConnell, who leads the Republican minority in the Senate, was hospitalised in March after a fall caused a concussion and fractured rib. He has reportedly endured at least three other falls since February.
The latest episode has sparked discussions among some Senate Republicans about holding a “special conference” to discuss McConnell’s future in leadership, though party leadership is not involved. Potential successors include Senators John Thune, John Barrasso, and John Cornyn.
